Last year, as my nephew’s birthday was quickly approaching I started to brainstorm gift ideas that didn’t include toys. Conrad finds all animals fascinating, especially dogs. Naturally, I wanted to create something that shared our common love for dogs and that is when I had this idea for 123: Dogs in Hawaii.
From Concept to Creation
For each number 1 through 10, I would photograph that amount of dogs together. I knew the smaller groups would be “easy”, but had no idea how the larger groups of dogs would be. However, I love a challenge and set out to find models for the ten different breeds featured: St. Bernard, Beagle, Pit Bull, Pomeranian, Corgi, Poi Dog, Dachshund, French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, and Shiba Inu.
This was a big project that was made only possible by the many dogs and their families who participated. Altogether I’ve photographed 59 different dogs around Oahu for this book. At times it was a little crazy – but in the best way possible. There were lots of fun props, drool, treats, and peanut butter involved! Here are a few behind-the-scenes photos from our shoots:
Bringing 123: Dogs in Hawaii to Life
Within a few months, there was a growing interest for this book to be published on a larger scale. I was very excited that what started off as just a Birthday/Christmas present has grown into something bigger! This book is another way for me to share my passion for pet photography with a new audience! I’m very proud of this book and poured my heart into every page. It’s a book for kids to teach them how to count from 1 to 10, but it is also a book for anyone who would like a small reminder of how much joy and love dogs bring into our lives.
A few weeks ago I visited Volcano and finally got to deliver the first copy of 123: Dogs in Hawaii to my nephew! It truly is a special present that we both can enjoy together. Every morning Conrad would pull this book off the shelf and bring it to me to read. It is no surprise that we both love the same page – a yearbook-style collage of all the dogs!
Pre-sales are now available via Kickstarter until January 25th and every pledge helps brings this dream one step closer to reality! There are various rewards that will include postcards, a memory game, star charms or a custom pet figurine from DaCraftyLilNinja, and a photo shoot for your pet. A launch party is also in the works with our friends at Hawaii Doggie Bakery, more details on coming soon!
Congratulations on surpassing your original goal, Keri!
